How to remove standing water: step by step
Once the area is electrically safe and you’re geared up, work through these steps in order.
- Set up your discharge path first. Decide where the water is going before you start pumping. Run the hose well away from the foundation, downhill if you can, so the water drains off instead of flowing back in.
- Place the submersible pump at the lowest point. Water flows to the low spot, so that’s where the pump belongs. Plug it into a GFCI-protected outlet outside the wet area.

What’s the safest way to pump water out of a basement?
A flooded basement has one hazard the rest of the house doesn’t: the water outside the walls. If you pump a basement empty while the surrounding soil is still saturated, the water pressure in the ground pushes against walls that no longer have water inside to balance it. That pressure imbalance can crack or even collapse a basement wall.
FEMA’s guidance is to pump out water gradually when the ground outside is waterlogged — roughly one-third of the water per day. Pump some out, wait, and watch the water level. If it rises again after you pump, the ground is still draining into the basement and you need to keep pacing it. Discharge matters more than people expect. Three rules keep you out of trouble:
- Away from the foundation. Run the discharge hose far enough that the water can’t seep back down to the basement or crawlspace you just emptied. Downhill is best.
- Not onto a neighbor’s property. Redirecting your floodwater onto someone else’s land can create both a flooding problem and a legal one.
