What PPE do you need for flood cleanup?
PPE — personal protective equipment — is the barrier between you and what floodwater carries: bacteria, sewage, mold spores, chemicals, and the dust kicked up when wet materials are torn out. The mistake most people make isn’t skipping gear entirely — it’s wearing the wrong level for the water they’re dealing with. A dust mask and gardening gloves are fine for mopping up a clean supply-line leak and dangerously inadequate for a storm-flooded basement.

- Respiratory protection — an N95 or, for heavier exposure, a P100 respirator. Never a cloth or surgical mask for mold.

Not all floodwater is equally dangerous, and the gear scales with it. The standard framework, from IICRC S500, sorts water into three categories — and the higher the category, the more protection you need.
- Category 1 (clean): a broken supply line or rainwater. Lowest risk. An N95, nitrile gloves, goggles, and boots cover most work.
- Category 2 (gray): discharge from appliances or some seepage. Moderate contamination. Step up to heavier gloves and keep skin covered.
- Category 3 (black): sewage backups and storm floodwater. A genuine biohazard. Full protection: P100 respirator, long heavy rubber gloves, waterproof boots, sealed goggles, and coveralls — no exposed skin.

Do you need a respirator for mold?
Yes — and a dust mask doesn’t count. Mold spores are small, and a cloth or surgical mask neither filters them reliably nor seals to your face, so spore-laden air leaks straight in around the edges. The EPA’s guidance for cleaning mold in your home recommends wearing at least an N95 respirator, along with gloves and goggles, even for small jobs.
The size of the mold problem decides how far you go:
- Small, surface mold (under about 10 square feet — roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch): the EPA says most people can handle it themselves with an N95, gloves, and goggles.
- Larger areas, heavy growth, or tearing out moldy drywall and carpet: step up to a P100 filter or a half-face respirator with P100 cartridges. Demolition stirs up far more spores than wiping a surface does.
- Extensive mold, or mold after sewage flooding: the EPA recommends bringing in a professional with experience in contaminated-water and large-scale mold work.
Why the jump to P100? An N95 filters at least 95% of airborne particles; a P100 filters at least 99.97% and resists oils, which matters when you’re disturbing dense, established mold. NIOSH — the federal institute that certifies respirators — stresses that any respirator only protects you if it fits and seals. That means no facial hair crossing the seal, and ideally a fit check each time you put it on. A respirator hanging loose under your chin or perched on a beard is decoration, not protection.

Hands and feet take the most direct contact with floodwater, and thin disposable gloves alone won’t survive contaminated-water work — they tear, and they stop at the wrist where dirty water runs down your arm.
Gloves
- Nitrile disposable gloves are fine for clean-water handling, for using detergents, and as a liner under heavier gloves. They’re cheap and you throw them out when they’re soiled.
- Long-cuffed heavy rubber, neoprene, or PVC gloves are what you want for Category 2 and 3 water, sewage, and disinfectants. The long cuff covers your forearm so water can’t run inside, and the thicker material resists tears and chemicals. The EPA specifically calls for non-porous gloves like these when you’re working with disinfectants such as diluted bleach.
- Always wash your hands with soap and clean water immediately after removing gloves — gloves reduce exposure, they don’t eliminate it.
Boots and waders
- Waterproof rubber boots with a non-slip sole are the baseline. Wet floors are slick, and floodwater hides nails, glass, and debris that can cut through ordinary shoes.
- Rubber waders make sense for standing water deeper than a few inches, keeping contaminated water off your legs entirely.
- Steel- or composite-toe waterproof boots add protection when you’re moving heavy soaked furniture or working around demolition.

The respirator, gloves, and boots get the attention, but a few more items round out real protection:
- Goggles, not safety glasses. Splash-proof goggles that seal around the eyes — without ventilation holes — keep contaminated water and cleaning chemicals out. Open-sided safety glasses don’t stop a splash.
- Coveralls or dedicated work clothes. Disposable Tyvek-style coveralls are ideal for contaminated-water and mold work because you can peel them off and bag them. If you wear regular clothes, wear long sleeves and pants, and wash them separately in hot water afterward — never with the family laundry.
- A hard hat if there’s any risk of falling debris during demolition or in a structurally questionable area.
- Hearing protection if you’re running pumps, generators, or air movers for hours in an enclosed space.

Putting it together: a gear checklist by water type
Use this as a quick reference before you start. When the situation is uncertain, default to the heavier column.
Clean water (Category 1) — a supply-line leak or rainwater:
